Volunteer Information
Authentic experience:
Even though this is in a remote area, this will be an amazing, authentic and rewarding experience.
Our health clinic is based out of Nuevo Edén, a small village outside of Barillas in Huehuetenango. You can locate the Casa Colibrí medical clinic by typing “N 15 59.552 W 91 16.795” into Google Maps and switch to satellite view to see the clinic.
Casa Colibrí’s Mission in Guatemala: Casa Colibrí’s mission is to help the Mayan people of northwest Guatemala improve the quality of their lives through programs in health, education, and infrastructure. Our eye clinic encompasses and furthers that mission with the wonderful gift of sight for these deserving peoples.
This is a remote area:
The in-country travel is through mountainous areas. Most is quite pleasant travel but the roads are up
and down and curvy. There will be several places we’ll have to go into 4 WD and the last several miles
will even be in 4WD low. During clinic we will be actually sleeping and having our meals in the clinic
facility itself. Although all the other buildings in the village are dirt floor wooden cabins, our clinic has
two fairly modern buildings one for the clinic and the other for our living facilities, with the clinic
building completed in 2009. All the windows and doors have screens. We have electricity and limited
internet via satellite. The new living quarters (completed in 2019) has bunk rooms, hot showers,
electricity and a nice kitchen facility. The bunks have nice single mattresses. You will need to bring
sheets/blanket or a sleeping bag.
